Super Nintendo
FAQ
I have been playing (name of RPG) using ZSNES,
but now I have to (or want to) use SNES9x. Do I have to start the game over
again? No! Save RAM (the kind of save you can make on a
real SNES) are fully compatible between SNES9x and ZSNES. If you have been using
save states, load the game and your latest save state into ZSNES and save your
game using the game's save function (i.e. save the game the way you would ifyou
were playing on a real SNES). Do this for every RPG you have save states for.
Now, open your ZSNES.CFG file in a text editor. Find the line that begins with
"SaveDirectory =". If there is a directory listed there, your ZSNES save games
will be in that directory. If there is nothing after the "=", your save games
will be in the directory your ROMs are in.Copy all the files ending in ".SRM"
from that directory into the"SNESNAPS" subdirectory of SNES9x. Now, change the
"SaveDirectory" line to the complete path to SNESNAPS.For example, if you have
SNES9x in "D:\EMU\SNES\SNES9x", change the line to read "SaveDirectory =
D:\EMU\SNES\SNES9x\SNESNAPS".After you have done this, your Save RAM files will
be shared between ZSNES and SNES9x.
In (name of RPG) I can't see what I'm doing
because there are clouds/shadows/water in the way. You need to enable transparencies. In SNES9x, use
the "-tr" command line switch. In ZSNES, switch to one of the video modes which
says "16bpp". You will probably need Scitech Display Doctor to use these video
modes in ZSNES.
Chrono Trigger freezes with a black screen when
I try to change party members. Turn on your emulator's sound support.
Dragon Quest 1/2 doesn't play any sound, and
freezes sometimes. I'm using ZSNES.
Use SNES9x 1.19 to play Dragon Quest
1/2.
I can't run Dragon Quest 3r. I've downloaded
many copies of the ROM and none of them work. For some reason, SNES9x and ZSNES have trouble
detecting the cartridge format of this game. There's nothing you can do about it
with ZSNES, but with SNES9x try the "-hirom" and "-interleave" command line
options (try using one, the other, both, and none, and see if any combination
works). If you absolutely must use ZSNES, there *is* a copy of Dragon Quest
3rwhich works with ZSNES, but I don't know where you can get it. Also, sound
support must be turned on to run Dragon Quest 3r.
In Dragon Quest 5, the monsters become
invisible when one of my characters casts a spell. Use SNES9x 1.19, which fixes this bug.
In Dragon Quest 6, the overworld map looks a
bit strange. I'm using ZSNES. There are three solutions. You can switch to the
"new gfx engine" if you're running in the 320x240x16bpp video mode. This will
cause problems in other parts of the game, and you'll have to switch back and
forth. Ifyou can't use the new gfx engine, you can turn off layer #2. You'll
haveto turn it back on for other parts of the game. The only "ideal" solutionis
to use SNES9x 1.19 for Dragon Quest 6.
I'm playing Final Fantasy 4 with J2E's
translation patch. I got to theTower of Babil, Yang blew himself up, and now
the plot won't advance anyfarther. Several SNES games by Square have multiple
revisions, or versions ofthe cartridge. There are two versions of FF4, two
versions of FF2US, andat least two versions of FF3US. This is why Game Genie
codes don't workcorrectly on all copies of the same game. The upshot of this is
that thetranslation patch only works on one of the revisions of FF4. Get
anothercopy of the ROM from a different source.
I have the full translation patch from RPGe for
Magic Knight Rayearth, but when I patch the ROM, it doesn't work. Again, there are multiple versions of the ROM. In
this case, there isonly one version of the *game*, but there are several
different dumps ofthe Rayearth ROM made with different brands of backup device,
and only one of them will work with the translation patch. Get another copy of
the ROM from a different source.
Magic Knight Rayearth freezes after the first
few minutes of gameplay,at the scene where Clef gives the girls their magic and
armour. Turn on your emulator's sound support.
The menu text in Secret of Mana looks
strange. Secret of Mana uses "Mode 5", which is a SNES
screen mode with doubledhorizontal resolution. If you're using SNES9x, use the
"-hires" commandline option. If you're using ZSNES, choose the 640x480x16bpp
videomode (You will probably need Scitech Display Doctor to use this mode in
ZSNES)
The text in (name of Japanese RPG) looks
strange (And I don't justmean that it's in Japanese) Several Japanese RPGs, including Seiken Densetsu 3
and Romancing SaGa 3,use Mode 5 for text windows and/or menus. See the question
about Secretof Mana.
I heard that the newest version of ZSNES
supports Super Mario RPG, butI can't run it. Many online copies of the Super Mario RPG ROM are
corrupt. Get onefrom a reputable source. Only ZSNES versions .800c and .800a
supportSuper Mario RPG. Finally, sound support must be turned on.
I don't have a sound card. Can I still play
Chrono Trigger, DragonQuest 3r, Magic Knight Rayearth, etc.? Yes! Using SNES9x, the "-s" commandline switch
will allow the SPC700(the coprocessor in the SNES which handles sound) to be
emulated whethersound hardware is available or not. With ZSNES, use the switch
"-s -dd".If you don't have a sound card, I recommend using these switches for
allgames, since many games run poorly when the SPC700 is not present.
I do have a sound card, but I am running SNES9x
on an original Pentiumand it is very slow with sound on. Can I still play these
games without sound? Yes! Use the commandline switches "-s -r 0"
(that's a zero). This willemulate the SPC700, but not the actual CPU-intensive
sound mixing and output.
